This would especially increase usability for people writing the comment, as you can define the subject as you like e.g. *Comment on "Email as a Commenting System" [spenc.es]*etc.

โจ spence wrote:replyThere are some restrictions on the local part of the address portion of the email spec that limit the usefulness of this approach. Mainly the length and the allowed characters arenโt very compatible with URL paths, so it just becomes problematic for it to work.
This has become less of an issue more recently because in the latest version (that Iโm open sourcing soon), the hashing is no longer used in the subject line. Now itโs just the resource youโre commenting on, which also just aligns semantically with what a subject line is supposed to be.

โจ spence wrote:replySo happy to hear you like it. I will definitely let you know when itโs open source (getting very close now).
Will I get an email when someone replies to my comment?
Good question! For now no, because I donโt think that what people want. However, if you go to your comment[#78b770a4](https://spenc.es/comment/78b770a4>](https://spenc.es/comment/78b770a4), you will see an RSS link.
Every comment has an atom feed so people can opt-in to get notifications to when people respond to a comment. Thereโs also a page of all comments, and you can even choose an alias.
But Iโm grateful for your interest. Feel free to leave feedback anywhere on this site or just contact me.

I think this is very neat. Would be really nice to see this as open source. I think it would be especially useful for small sites that have a static website and do not wish to install some large, complicated, database backed, web based comment system. Email is still such a useful medium for communication and this would be another neat application that builds upon the advantages and maturity of email.

I totally agree with email. Itโs been totally undervalued as an interface.
I think maybe part of the reason why is that itโs historically (and still is) kind of โdifficultโ. But, once you get it set up and working itโs so nice. Iโve really been enjoying seeing people play with this, and just knowing that thereโs a way interact with people on my website makes me feel so much more excited about writing content for my website (which Iโm really bad about haha).

Maybe using this people will feel less nervous to compose longer more thoughtful conversations on the Internet and we'll start seeing richer, deeper conversations take place through the online ecosystem!
